There were no book stores in Turkmenistan, only warehouses of textbooks. The culture of reading had left with the fall of the Soviet Union, but the desire to learn about a greater world and see images of life beyond their borders brought a full room of students every day to my after school English clubs. With help from family and friends in the states I had over a thousand children picture books sent to Turkmenistan and then taught the local Turkmen librarian how to store and distribute them. The awe on my students' faces as they looked through those books was one of my best memories of Peace Corps. 2008
