The picture is more of the laundry than the house. I took a picture of it in July 2001, seven months living in my site, to remember the hard work that went into my clean clothes before I returned to the land of washing machines. The photo summons images and feelings - the hard green soap, the scuffed up knuckles, sweating so much that my glasses fell off of my face - all for some clean undies. That is what Peace Corps is. Working hard, giving your all, giving more than you knew you had, not for clean undies, but for friends and family in your new community.
