This photo was taken in Togo, West Africa in May 2010, after I had been at post for 9 months. The subject is one of my favorite neighborhood children - Odeke - who "warmed up to the resident Yovo" and came to draw each morning on my front terrace. When I first met him he spoke no French, but eventually learned to say "I want to draw", "I'm finished", and "Thank you, good-bye, see you tomorrow" by the time the photo was taken. I think his smile speaks for itself in terms of everything Peace Corps Volunteers are trying to achieve with Goal 2.
