(Note the width of the river.) Our plane was part of the Peruvian air force and flew in weekly to this river landing. The Consolidated PBY Catalina was one of the most widely used, multi-role aircraft of World War II. We boarded the plane by jumping up and through the bubble hatch at the rear of the plane. This plane did two Amazon lift offs each day. We discovered the next morning after landing in Iquitos that after our flight, the plane was making another flight and hit a log in the Amazon, flipped over and sank killing all aboard. There is no picture of me kissing the tarmac in Iquitos prior to continuing our trip to Lima. PBY Catalina- Peruvian side of the Amazon.
