This is a picture of my future husband and I dancing in his village in Benin during the Christmas celebration. It was local tradition to place money on the foreheads of the dancers to show appreciation. Tom is placing money on my forehead, this is about two weeks after we first met at my swearing-in ceremony in Cotonou. We lived in country for another year after this picture was taken, our villages were two days travel apart using local bush taxis. It was before anyone had cell phones so we wrote each other letters that were passed through drivers and friends back and forth.
We've been married 18 years now, and have two beautiful children. West Africa still feels like home to us.
