This photo was taken September 2006, for the patron saint festivals of San Miguel in the community of San Miguel Ingenio, Metapan, Santa Ana, El Salvador. There is a Catholic church in the background, which is the host of the festivities. The Saint Michael fiestas last from September 27-29 each year. In the photo they are doing "carreras de caballos." The object of this activity is for the men on horseback to run up the road and try to stick a ballpoint pen into the rings hanging on the line above them. If they successfully get one on their pen, it has a number that corresponds to a prize. The people under the blue tarp brought the prizes and are waiting until their numbers are "caught." The man on the horse successfully got the ring just as I took this picture.
