This is a picture of a young woman named Sa'adiya. It was taken in the village of Tsanwa in the Maradi state of Niger in 2010. Sa'adiya is 14 years old in this picture. She was too old to go to the children's school (which only opened the year before and only taught children to age 10) and she was not yet married, so she could not attend the adult literacy classes. She was due to be married the next year and wanted to join the adult literacy classes then but didn't want to be behind. So, she would come to my house for literacy and numeracy classes every day at lunch time. Here she is practicing her writing.
