Campesinos build a mountaintop airstrip - by hand - near the remote pueblo of Concepción, Intibucá, Honduras. Concepción is cut off from the rest of Honduras by swollen rivers during the rainy season. The airstrip was to be long enough to handle large twin engine aircraft (such as DC-3's) that could fly local produce out of the area to be sold in larger markets elsewhere in Honduras. In the background sits the single engine STOL aircraft that flew a Peace Corps Volunteer photographer to this photo assignment at the still unfinished airstrip. April, 1970.
