Remembering the Late Norma Joy Carey: July 1940 - August 2011
Photo Description
Norma Joy Carey joined the Peace Corps Jamaica staff in June 1980. During her 30 years tenure she served us in the capacity of Senior Administrative Secretary, Alternate Cashier and Timekeeper. In later years, she was the Programming and Training Assistant for the Water and Sanitation Project. In all these varied capacities she served with distinction giving unstinting service to the countless Volunteers and her fellow staff members.
Her kind and compassionate disposition endeared staff and Volunteers alike. Having served the organization for so many years, she automatically became the resident historian whose accurate recollection we could always rely on. Joy witnessed the arrival of over fifty volunteer groups as in 1980 Group 29 arrived and when she retired in 2010 she had seen the arrival of Group 81. Volunteers whose life and service she had nurtured and influenced.
What we will miss most about Joy is her sincerity, her love for people, her selflessness and her infectious smile. She worked hard and served well.
