Photo Description
The Courage of Irene Malachi is well known in Vanuatu. Her influence extends to many rural areas where she has been in the vanguard of those seeking a new approach and understanding to HIV-AIDS and its effects.
Irene is now the holder of a quite rare distinction. She is one of just 34 people worldwide who has achieved special recognition from Peace Corps (PC) HQ in Washington. She has a personal story and her ability to have people understand HIV in a positive and compassionate way.
A small and moving Ceremony took place at PC Vanuatu HQ on January 2010 in which Irene was presented with a plaque from Washington by Eddie Stice, PC Vanuatu Country Director.
Director Stice pointed out that Irene is a "real hero. Real heroes put it all on the line. In so doing they are able to give peace and hope and a future."
Irene Malachi pointed out that the award gives her courage to go on. She said with emotion "I love my people and my country and sincerely want to do the best I can for them."
