Vance Brand watches as first of 1,800 tubewells sunk in the Rechna Doab area is turned on. Mr. Brand, who officiated at ceremonies at Sukheke when first 127 of these 1,800 tubewells were electrified, then was managing director of the US Development Loan Fund (DLF). The DLF, a US government banking agency, loaned WAPDA $15,200,000 for the tubewell project in Rechna Doab. American government agencies and experts are helping West Pakistan fight the creeping blight of “thur” and “sem.” Since 1952, about Rs. 47 crore in US loans and grants have gone into an American-Pakistani water and power development project, helping finance extensive ground water investigations, installation of 1,800 tubewells by WAPDA in the Punjab, and erection of power distribution facilities to electrify the tubewells.
