With a mixture of pride and awe, Hamdoulaye villagers gaze into the cavernous depths of their newly completed well. Few villages in the Hamdoulaye area have ever had a well, not even a dirt one, because the sources of water are too deep to reach with traditional tools and rope. As of the date of this photo, with the efforts of Peace Corps Volunteers working under the auspices of the Upper Volta Ministry of Agriculture, 550 modern wells have been constructed. Six hundred more are planned. 1971
